How Wind Can Hurt Your Home

How Wind Can Hurt Your Home

When Colorado gets hit by storms, we get hit hard. From blizzards to giant hailstorms, to tornados, we are no strangers to damaging weather events. Many times, rain and hail will be accompanied by high winds. These forceful winds can be just as damaging as rain and hail, if not more. That’s why it’s important for you to know which parts of your home are particularly at risk of damage from high winds so that you know what to look for once the storm has passed.

Siding

Siding is crucial in protecting your home from the elements. If you have siding that is lifting or warping, these can be further damaged or completely broken off during a windstorm. In addition, your siding can be beat up by flying debris. Make sure to inspect your siding for breaks and cracks after a storm, and have any damage repaired as soon as you are able.

Shingles

If strong enough, windstorms can take a serious toll on your roof. And if you have any old or weak shingles, strong winds are likely to rip them right off the top of your home. Missing shingles present major weak spots and allow water and possibly even critters to find their way into your home. If it has been a while since you’ve inspected your roof or had it replaced, it’s wise to give attention to it.

Fallen Trees

Fallen trees are also a serious threat after a storm. Beyond just ruining the look of your landscaping, fallen or broken trees can fall onto your house or worse, someone else’s. That’s why it’s so important that you keep an eye on the trees on your property well before a storm. Look for signs of decay, and if you have a tree that is dying, hire someone to remove it before the wind blows in.

These are some of the more major ways that wind can damage your home, but in some cases strong winds can damage your fence and windows as well. Most serious damage can be prevented by regularly inspecting your home for weak points and mending them.
