Protect Your Deck This Winter

One of the services we offer at Innovative Builders is deck care. An old, decrepit deck is not inviting in addition to being downright dangerous. When you call us, you can rest assured that we will be able to turn your deck into the deck of your dreams.

But as any deck owner knows, they require special care to keep them looking their best. Winter can present some unique issues for your deck. That is why today we want to share a few steps you can take to make sure that your deck is well protected from the elements this cold season.

Clear the Area

Just like Winter gutter and roof care, it is important to remove clutter from the surface area of your deck. If you leave planters or furniture on your deck throughout the season, it can cause fading, discoloration, or even some warping due to moisture pooling. To avoid these issues, just cover and store these pieces in a safe place.

Clean the Area

In addition to removing furniture from your deck, you will also want to remove any dirt, leaves, or other debris. Leaving things like these to sit on your deck over the Winter can encourage rot. So be sure to remove leaves and scrub your deck well to remove mold or mildew buildup as well.

Apply a Sealant

To prevent snow and ice from settling into the cracks of your deck and causing warping, be sure to apply a water repellent sealant. And when snow does fall, remove that as soon as you are able.

If you want to really go the extra mile, after completing the previously mentioned tasks, go ahead and cover the entire deck with a tarp. Unless you use your deck in the Wintertime, this will be just one extra way to keep your deck healthy and ready to be used when the weather eventually warms back up.
